The cleaners nobody can name

· 1 min read

A small home cleaning company in Kuwait City does careful, honest work. The crews arrive on time, they bring their own supplies, and they leave a flat looking the way it did the week the family moved in. Customers love them.

Ask those customers to recommend the company to a friend and something odd happens. They cannot. The business is named after the founders' initials, three capital letters followed by the words home services, and nobody remembers which three letters or in which order. So the recommendation becomes "the ones my sister uses, I will send you the number later", and later rarely comes.

The work is not the problem. The story is not the problem either: careful people who treat your home like their own is a story worth repeating. The problem is that the story has nothing to hang on.

A name is not the story. It is the hook. People need something short and sticky to attach the good feeling to, so that when they reach for it, it is there. It does not have to describe what you do. It does not even have to be easy to say. Plenty of names that meant nothing at first have come to mean a great deal, because someone kept telling one clear story under them for years.

What a name cannot be is forgettable. You can build meaning into an odd word over time. You cannot build meaning into a word nobody can find again.

So the order matters. First the useful story, the one people want to believe and pass on. Then a name that lets them carry it out of the door. Without the second, the first stays in the house where it happened.
