The cloth comes off once
When a new shop opens on a street in Heliopolis, there is sometimes a cloth over the sign. Someone pulls it away, people clap, and the thing that was finished in private is shown in public.
Many people still think about launching anything this way. The real work happens beforehand, out of sight: the name, the look, the product, the price. The opening is the reveal. After that, the job is mostly to keep things as they were on the day the cloth came off.
That picture made more sense when most of what a business said about itself was fixed in advance. A sign, a pack, a printed leaflet: once it was out, it was out, and little could be added.
Today almost nothing is finished on opening day. A shop, a product, a name in the neighbourhood gets built in small additions. A reply to a message late at night. A second version of the pack. The way the first complaint is handled. Something the owner learns in the first month and acts on in the second. What people end up knowing about it is less what was revealed and more what piled up.
So the opening is not the moment the work becomes visible. It is the first day of a different kind of work, the kind that happens a little every day, aimed at something that does not exist yet, and never quite ends.
The cloth comes off once. The building goes on.
