The club and the ordinary Tuesday

· 1 min read

A graduate in Jeddah has one ambition: to work for a football club. Any role, any department. She wants to be close to the thing she has loved since she was a child.

It is an understandable wish, and a common one. People pick employers the way fans pick shirts, for what the name stands for. A club, a fashion label, a film studio, a famous restaurant. From the outside, the work looks like the product.

But the product is what the public sees. The job is everything else.

At the club she would answer emails, reconcile invoices, chase a supplier who is late, fill in the same forms again, and handle someone who is upset about something that is not her fault. Those are the hours. The match on Saturday is ninety minutes she will probably spend working, and most weeks she will not even be near the pitch.

None of that makes the club a bad choice. It makes the club a place where days are spent like days anywhere else. The tasks, the pace, the people, the kind of problems that land on her desk: those decide whether she wakes up glad to go in. A logistics company with a team she respects might give her a better Tuesday than the club she worships.

The trouble with choosing by the product is that we start using it to excuse the rest. I love what we make, so I put up with how we make it. That bargain can last for years before anyone notices it is a poor one.

So the more useful question to ask before signing is not what the place makes. It is what she wants her ordinary days to be made of. The crowd or the quiet, the people or the numbers, the rush or the steady build.

The badge on the door changes very little about the Tuesday inside.
