The coach who disagrees nicely

· 1 min read

A boxing coach in Heliopolis is known for something that sounds like a contradiction. He tells nearly every new member that what they came in wanting is wrong, and they leave pleased.

A man arrives wanting to spar on day one. The coach says no, not for two months, and explains why in a way that makes the man feel taken seriously rather than refused. Being pleasant and going along are different things. Anyone can nod. The rare skill is holding a different view from the person in front of you and bringing them round to it without a fight, so that they are glad of the change they did not ask for.

He is also the first to say when someone has shown him a better way. A teenager once suggested a footwork drill from a video, and he tried it, kept it and thanked her in front of the class. He does not know the full route for anyone before they start, and he behaves as if he knows that. He asks questions. He listens to the answers. Being open to improvement, his own included, is part of the job.

What ties the two together is energy, and he brings a great deal of it. On a slow evening with three people in the room, he coaches as if the hall were full. That is not an act. It is a decision about what kind of room he wants, and the room follows him. People who arrived tired start moving faster.

We tend to treat a flat class, a quiet workshop or a listless call as something that happened to us. Usually it is a mirror.

What a room becomes depends a good deal on what the person leading it chose to carry through the door.
