The conversation we skip about work

· 1 min read

Most adults will spend more waking hours at work than anywhere else, including at home with the people they love.

And yet the talk about work is narrow. Salary, the commute, the manager, the next move. Practical things, and they matter.

What rarely comes up is the other question. What made the good ones good?

Ask someone about the best job they ever had and watch what happens. They slow down. They do not mention the pay. They talk about a person who trusted them early, a problem that was theirs to solve, a stretch of months when the work and the people around it fitted together and they went home tired in the right way.

Almost everyone carries one of those memories. Very few have ever been asked to describe it out loud.

That silence costs something. If we never name what made work worth the hours, we cannot look for it when choosing the next job, and we cannot build it for the people who work alongside us. We leave it to chance, as if a good job were weather.

It is not weather. Most of what people describe, when they finally get to describe it, is made of choices: who gets trusted, what gets explained, whether the work is allowed to matter to the person doing it.

The hours are going to be spent at work either way. The only open question is whether anyone talks about making them worth spending.
