The curtain argument

· 1 min read

A family in Tabuk spends an entire evening on the curtains for the sitting room. Sand or white, long or short. Three siblings, two opinions each, a fabric sample passed around until its corners go soft. Everyone is animated. Nobody is hurt.

Upstairs, their father is finding the stairs harder every month. That is the conversation nobody has started.

The curtain argument works because nothing rides on it. Whichever fabric wins, the room will look fine, and everybody can lose gracefully. It feels like taking part in the family's decisions. It costs nothing.

The other conversation would cost a great deal. Who moves, who pays, who gives up which weekends, what their father actually wants and whether anyone will ask him. It is harder to begin, harder to finish, and very easy to leave for another evening.

So the easy argument fills the space where the hard one should be. Not out of bad intent. It is a relief to argue about something that does not matter, and the relief is pleasant enough to stretch for years.

Every household, every group of friends and every small business has its own version of the fabric sample. The lively debate that never quite becomes urgent. The decision everybody has a view on because no view can do any harm.

When a discussion is spirited, comfortable and somehow never pressing, it is worth asking what it is standing in front of.
