The day he names
Think of a picture framer in Minya who gives every customer a day. Not a range, not a vague later in the week, a day. And the frame is on the counter that day, every time.
It sounds like a small habit. It changes the whole shop.
Once he has decided that a promised date cannot move, a great deal of effort simply disappears. He does not spend the afternoon working out what to tell the customer arriving at five. He does not invent a supplier delay or hope she forgets. There is nothing to manage, because the frame is ready.
The work improves too, which is the part people do not expect. Without a date to wrestle with, all his attention goes into the corners and the glass. The frame is not finished because it became flawless. It is finished because he said Thursday, Thursday has come, and he did the best work he could inside the time he gave himself.
Over the years he has become careful about which days he names. A large mirror with a carved border does not get the same answer as a small certificate. He learnt that only by keeping every promise he made, including the ones that cost him a late night.
Keeping the date is what teaches you how to set it.
