The deadline does the selling

· 1 min read

I have built more fake deadlines than I would like to count. The countdown that resets on reload. The last chance that comes back in October. Everyone has learned to ignore them, including the people who build them.

Then September arrives and the urgency is real.

A mother buying school shoes has a date. Not one we chose, or dressed up, or quietly extended on Thursday afternoon because the numbers were soft. Term starts. The shoes fit by then or the morning goes badly. Nobody in that transaction needs to be persuaded that time is short.

Which changes the job completely. In a manufactured season the work is to create tension. In a real one the tension is already sitting in someone's chest, and every push we add is weight on a feeling they are trying to put down. The brand that wins that week is not the loudest one. It is the one that is in stock, open late, near enough, and honest about whether the thing arrives in time.

Remove the friction. Do not add urgency. You cannot sell someone a hurry they already have.

There is a second part, and it is the one that gets missed from a regional desk. This is not one deadline. Egyptian schools, Gulf schools and the international schools go back on three different clocks, and they can sit weeks apart. A campaign built for "back to school" as a single moment arrives early for one of them and late for the other two.

Late is the expensive one. By then she has already bought the shoes.
