The first reply to an idea

· 1 min read

Late one night around Ramadan, with the family still at the table, a cousin starts describing a plan. He wants to take small groups by felucca along the west bank at Luxor, early in the day, with a stop at a village and a guide who grew up there.

Everyone at the table can see the problems at once. The heat. The permits. The boats. Who would insure it. Whether tourists would get up that early.

And the instinct, a kind one, is to say so. To protect him from a mistake by naming every flaw before he has reached the end of his sentence.

It is worth trying the other reply first. What if the first thing he heard was interest? Which village? What would the guide say at the first stop? Who exactly is it for?

Enthusiasm in that moment does things criticism cannot. It is catching, so he starts to talk faster and think further. It pushes him out to the edges of the idea, which is usually where the interesting version lives. And it quiets the fear that makes most people describe a smaller, safer plan than the one they are actually carrying.

None of this is a promise. The problems will all still be there tomorrow, and a no is just as easy to give next week as it is tonight.

But tonight the listener's job is to help the idea become as good as it can be. That is good for the idea, and it costs neither of them anything.
