The freezer by the door

· 1 min read

The appliance shops move the chest freezers to the front of the floor about a fortnight before Eid al-Adha, which this year is expected in the last days of the month.

In Cairo they stand on the pavement outside, lids open, plugged into nothing. In Riyadh they are just inside the entrance, at the end of the aisle where the seasonal stock goes, alongside the fans and the water coolers.

No campaign put them there. The category advertises capacity in litres, an energy rating and, in a good month, a payment plan over six months. What the person who runs that floor has understood is that the freezer is not being bought to store food in general. It is being bought because a household that is about to receive its share of the sacrifice needs somewhere to put it, needs it before one specific week, and cannot wait for the summer sales.

That is the real job, and it produces the sharpest peak in a category that otherwise behaves like furniture. A deadline the brand did not set. A quantity the customer can already picture. A purchase that cannot be deferred by a month.

The interesting part is who is actually present for it. The manufacturer is running its usual message about space and efficiency, on a schedule set somewhere else. The retailer, who has no campaign budget and no interest in one, moved a heavy white box six metres and took the whole occasion.

The peak belongs to a ritual the brand never appears in. The person who moved the freezer understood the week better than anybody who wrote a plan for it.
