The gift nobody was expecting

· 1 min read

In many families in Alexandria, nobody visits empty-handed. You arrive with a box from the good bakery, hand it over at the door, and it goes on a side table where it is rarely mentioned again.

It is a kind gesture, and it is also an expected one. That is the trouble with it. When a gift is required, it becomes very hard for anyone, including the person carrying it, to tell how much of it is care and how much is custom.

The value of a gift was never the object. It was the message that someone thought about you in particular and chose something because of that thought. Obligation quietly removes the message and leaves only the box.

So the gifts that land hardest are often the ones with no occasion attached. A grandson who spends an afternoon showing his grandmother how to make video calls on her phone, slowly, twice, until she can do it alone. A friend who sends a book with one page folded down because it made her think of you. Neither costs much. Both are unmistakable, because nobody required them.

Brands run into the same wall. A discount sent on every holiday is read as routine, because it is routine. A small gesture that arrives on an ordinary week, for a reason the customer can see, is read as attention.

The occasion does not make the gift. The intention does, and an occasion can easily hide it.
