Piece 586Market

The ground moved under the shop

· 1 min read

For a few years a woman in Jabriya sold made-to-order name necklaces from her home. Almost every order came the same way: the people who followed her account saw each new design the day she posted it, and a good share of them bought.

Then the feed changed. Her posts began reaching a fraction of the people who had chosen to follow her. Nothing about the necklaces was different. The ground the shop stood on was.

There are two ways to meet a moment like that.

One is to fight to get it back. Post more often. Post at different hours. Read every theory about how the feed now works and try them all, hoping the old arrangement returns. Plenty of sellers do exactly this for a long time.

The other is to say, plainly, that this happened, and then decide what it means. The following she had built was real, but the road to it belonged to someone else and could be narrowed again whenever they liked. The hours already spent growing that account were spent. They would not come back by spending more.

So the question stopped being how to restore it. It became what to build next that she would own: a list of customers who had asked to hear about new designs, a reason for people to come back each time a wedding or a birth needed a gift, a piece good enough that people sent each other its picture.

The world keeps shifting under small businesses, occasionally in their favour. The work that went into the old foundation creates no duty to keep standing on it once it has gone.
