Piece 303Craft

The launch that spent its week

· 1 min read

Two people in Muscat open small online shops for handmade wooden toys in the same season.

The first puts everything into the opening week. Paid posts, a giveaway, a countdown, a discount for anyone who tags a friend. The numbers jump. Then the money is gone, the people who came for the giveaway drift away, and by the second month very little is happening.

The second starts quietly. One new design a month. A post on the same day every week. Every message answered. A clear idea of which families the toys are for, so every choice points the same way. The toys are made properly, so they survive a toddler, and they do not come back broken.

A year later, the second shop is the one people recommend.

Speed at the start feels like progress because it is so easy to see. But a fast start pointed in a vague direction only arrives nowhere sooner. And a fast start that cannot be kept up leaves nothing for the long middle, which is where almost every small business is actually decided.

What wins over a year is duller. Showing up again. Knowing where you are trying to go. Making something that holds together. None of it looks like much in the first week. All of it is still working in the fortieth.
