The lease outlived the test

The coast road is open again, and the units along it are the same units.

Same names, same containers, same marina kiosks, the same three burger places inside four hundred metres of each other, the same signage going back up after nine months in a store room. Egypt's North Coast season starts now, and for a good number of Cairo operators it is no longer a decision.

Ask why they are opening this year and listen to the shape of the answer. The fit-out is paid for. The equipment is already up there. The landlord wanted the season again and the alternative was losing the pitch to somebody else. The staff know the road, the suppliers know the road, the compound managers take their calls. Not one of those is a sentence about what last summer earned.

Behind all of it there was a real decision, three or four summers ago, and it was a good one. Take a small unit. Learn what nine dishes and six staff can do on a beach strip. Come home in September knowing something.

That was a test, and it had an end date in it, which is most of why it was worth doing.

The test passed, or passed well enough. Then it stopped being a test. The unit came back the following year because it existed. The year after that, nobody asked. By now it is a line in the summer plan that arrives already approved, funded quietly by a Cairo business that has to earn it back through the winter.

The season ends in September. The commitment does not.

The only honest question on that road this month is the one nobody says out loud: whether they would take the unit today, at this year's rent, if they were not already holding it.
