The length of the month

· 1 min read

Somebody sends the variance line and asks what happened. Spend up, revenue up a little less, efficiency down. Within ten minutes three people are looking at creative.

The month had thirty-one days in it. The one before it had thirty.

An account run on a daily budget does not spend a monthly number. It spends a daily number multiplied by however many times the sun came up. Three per cent more days is three per cent more spend before anybody touches the work, and it arrives in the report looking exactly like a decision somebody made.

Then count the weekends, which is where it turns regional. A month holds four Fridays or five. Friday is the family day across most of this region, the office weekend does not fall on the same two days in the Emirates as it does in Saudi Arabia or Egypt, and demand moves with all of it. Groceries, restaurants and family outings gain a day. Anything sold to a business loses one, because the working days went the other way. Same budget, same audience, same creative, a different mix of days, a different answer at the bottom.

A month is a billing convention. It is how a platform invoices and how finance closes the books. It was never a unit of demand, and the customer has no idea when the invoice runs.

So I count two things before I explain a variance: the days, and the Fridays. It takes a minute and it usually accounts for most of the gap in the line. Whatever is left after that is the part worth a meeting.
