The lighter kind of day
A sandal maker in the Marrakech medina can spend his day in two very different ways.
In one, he sells to whoever walks past wanting the cheapest pair. The work is simple. The same cut, the same glue, the quickest stitch. He could do it half asleep, and some days does. Each sale ends in a long haggle over a few coins with a buyer who will not remember the shop by evening. The work is easy and the day is exhausting.
In the other, he makes for the handful of people who come looking for him. They ask about the leather, wait a week for a pair cut to their feet, and come back two years later for another. The work is harder. More judgement, more care, more chances to get it wrong. And yet those are the days he finishes feeling lighter.
That lightness is not the same as the work being easy. It is closer to the opposite. It comes from doing something that matters to someone, with skill he spent years earning, at a level of effort that stretches him without breaking him. He can be sure of himself even when he is not certain the next pair will come out right.
Easy work rarely gives that feeling. Neither does work that runs on fear and argument.
What decides which kind of day he has is not his talent, which is the same in both. It is whom he chose to make sandals for. Choose different customers and the whole job changes with them.
