The man who knows the cloth

· 1 min read

Walk into the cloth lanes of Al-Balad in Jeddah with a vague idea, something light for the summer, or a fabric for a daughter's dress, and you are lost within a minute. Hundreds of rolls, all slightly different, all priced differently, each one praised by the man selling it.

Then you find the one shopkeeper who actually knows.

He rubs a corner between two fingers and tells you it will shine after three washes. He tells you which white yellows in the sun, which weave breathes in August, which one is beautiful on the roll and miserable to sew. He sends you to a neighbour when he does not have the right thing. You leave having spent less than you planned, with more than you came for.

There is always a place for a person like that. Shoppers do not need to be persuaded to value him. The moment they meet him they understand, and many will come back for twenty years.

The difficult part is on his side. That knowledge took decades of handling cloth, listening to tailors complain, learning which mills changed their yarn and when. And it does not keep. New fabrics arrive, old ones quietly get worse, and the expert who stops paying attention becomes, within a few seasons, one more man praising his own rolls.

So the question for anyone who wants to be that person is not whether the market wants a guide. It always does. The question is whether you will do the slow work of knowing, and then keep doing it after you are known.

There will never be a shortage of people who are lost. There is always a shortage of people who know the way.
