The month the money moves

· 1 min read

The portfolio line for July reads flat. Near enough the same as June, and the summary that goes upstairs will say so in one sentence.

Underneath it, everything is moving.

Running several consumer P&Ls at once teaches you that a month has no single weather. July is the dead month for one brand and the peak for another. The one that sells things people wear in the heat is having its best weeks of the year. The one that sells to new parents is having an ordinary month, because a baby does not know what month it is. The one built around a daily routine is soft, because holidays break routines. Add them up and the total does not move.

What the flat number hides is that the money did. In most months every brand defends its line. A budget review in March is a negotiation, and the weakest case still leaves with most of what it had, because nobody gives up a number voluntarily. In July the line moves without a fight for a simple reason: the brand with no season cannot spend it. The team is on leave, the creative is not ready, there is no offer worth making. So the money goes to the brand that can use it, and nobody argues, because there is nothing to defend.

I have sat on that desk from the Gulf, in an office that has emptied for the summer, and watched the cleanest reallocation of the year happen in an afternoon, by email, with no deck.

It is also the one that happens by accident. Nothing in the calendar asks for it. It happens because a line went unspent and someone noticed, and when nobody notices, the money sits in the wrong brand until September.

The best allocation decision of the year gets made in the month nobody is in the room to argue. Which is also why it so rarely gets made on purpose.
