The need the feed keeps pressing

· 1 min read

Most people, most of the time, are tending three things at once.

Standing: how we are seen, where we rank, whether we are keeping up. Security: enough money, a healthy family, the sense that tomorrow will hold. Purpose: the feeling that the days are going somewhere, that the effort adds up to something.

In a calm life the three pull against each other and roughly balance. The wish for standing is checked by the wish to be secure. The wish to be secure is checked by wanting a life that amounts to something.

The feed does not respect that balance. It learns which of the three gets a reaction from you and presses it, again and again, because pressing works. A young man in Dubai who once lingered on one expensive car is shown a hundred more, then the watches, then the people who seem to own everything at twenty-four. His sister, who once read a worrying health story, is fed fear until every headline is a warning. Neither of them chose the emphasis. It was chosen for them, a tap at a time.

The result is a person overdoing one need and starving another. Standing without security becomes debt. Security without purpose becomes a small, anxious life. Purpose chased without either becomes exhaustion.

This lens explains a lot of what spreads. The products, movements and trends that catch fire are almost always hitting one of the three, hard. So does much of what passes for public argument.

It also explains a lot of stress that has no obvious cause. When someone feels pulled out of shape, it is worth asking which of the three has been pushed, and which has been forgotten.
