The night before the sale

· 1 min read

Every big sale weekend in Riyadh produces the same hero.

She runs a small online shop from a spare room. The night before the sale she is still printing labels at two in the morning. Her brother drives to the courier depot with the back seat full. The payment page breaks an hour after launch and she fixes it from her phone in a car park. By Saturday she has sold more than ever, and everyone she knows tells the story with admiration.

Across town another seller has the same weekend and no story at all. The bestsellers were boxed on Tuesday. The courier collection was booked a week earlier, with a second firm on standby. She ran a test order through the checkout three days out and found the broken page then. When a delivery van failed on Friday morning she did not panic, because the message to customers was already written in case it did.

The first seller will tell you this weekend was unusual. The supplier was late, the site was slow, the couriers were overwhelmed. All true, and all of it happens every sale weekend, to everyone. A surprise that turns up every single time is not a surprise. It is a part of the plan that nobody wrote down.

We are raised on the rescue. School rewards the essay finished at midnight. Films end with the clock running out. So we learn to read the scramble as commitment, and the calm seller as lucky.

She is not lucky. She learned it: what to book early, what to test, which spare to keep, where a weekend like this usually breaks. It is a skill, and it is dull to watch.

The applause goes to the person who saved the weekend. The business goes to the one who never needed saving.
