The opportunity behind the counter

· 1 min read

A young man in Beni Suef is waiting for his chance. He finished his degree, he reads about marketing in the evenings, and he is sure that one day a proper brand will give him a proper job, and then he will show what he can do.

In the meantime, he helps in his uncle's shop. It sells parts for motorbikes from a narrow front on a busy street, and it has a problem the uncle mentions every week. Half the riders in town do not know the shop carries the part they need, so they ride to the next town for it, and come back to complain that it was expensive.

Nobody has written down what the shop stocks. Nobody tells the mechanics nearby. There is no sign that says anything beyond the family name. The customers who would come are out there, and nothing connects them to the shelves.

The nephew does not see this as his chance. It looks too small, too close to home, too much like a chore. A chance, in his mind, arrives from outside with a title attached.

But this is the chance. A real business with a real problem, and an owner who would let him try almost anything. He could learn more in three months of solving it than in a year of waiting, and he would have something true to say about what he did.

Most openings do not look like openings. They look like a problem that belongs to someone else, a job nobody asked for, a thing that should have been fixed already. They do not announce themselves, and they rarely come looking for you.

They sit there in plain sight, waiting for somebody to decide they are worth solving.
