The pattern under the noise

· 1 min read

A woman in Kuwait City sells children's clothes online, and her sales look random. A strong Monday, a dead Wednesday, three orders at midnight, none the next night. After a year of it she has decided that selling is partly luck.

Usually it is not luck. It is a faint pattern sitting under a lot of noise. When the noise is loud enough, the pattern does not just look weak. It looks absent.

So she does what most people do and reaches for something easier to see. Likes on a post, followers gained this week, how busy her inbox feels. These are proxies, and they move every day, which makes them feel like information. Mostly they are more noise.

The signal was there all along, and it only shows when the orders are laid out differently. Put every sale of the year in one column, sort it by customer instead of by day, and the picture changes. A small group of mothers order again a few weeks after their first purchase, roughly when a child outgrows the last size. A spike that looked random follows each time one of them posts a photo of her child wearing the clothes. The midnight orders come from the same few streets.

None of that was visible day to day. All of it was there.

Things we do not understand tend to get called luck, or taste, or magic. Most of them are systems, sending signals we have not yet learned to pick out. The work is to build a better lens, not to make peace with the mystery.
