The people in the lift

· 1 min read

A neighbour from the twelfth floor steps in and everyone says good morning. The man who walks his dog at seven gets a nod. The woman who once helped carry a sofa up the stairs gets asked how her mother is.

The cleaner who has mopped the same lobby for three years steps in with his bucket, and the lift goes quiet. Not hostile. Just quiet, as if the doors had opened onto an empty corridor. Most of the residents could not tell you his name. Some could not tell you whether he was there this morning.

None of it feels like a decision. Nobody chooses to overlook him. A face we already know lights up on its own, and a face we do not know stays in the background without our help.

That would be a minor matter of manners if it stayed in the lift. It does not. The building's notices are printed in one language. The residents' group settles the cleaning schedule without asking the people who clean. A new rule sends staff to the service lift at the back, beside the bins, which stops on half the floors.

Nobody meant harm by any of it. The building was simply arranged around the people its residents could see. Everyone else was left unheard, unasked and worked around, treated less as neighbours than as part of the fittings.

What changes it is rarely a policy. It is learning one name.
