The phone that cannot take the photo

· 1 min read

The moment you most want a photograph is the moment the phone tells you it is full.

Thousands of pictures of receipts, screenshots of addresses, the same sunset eleven times. Each was worth keeping on its own. Together they have left no room for the next one, which is the only one you actually wanted.

A phone with no free space is not a fuller phone. It is a worse one. It cannot do the thing it is for, because what it is for always happens next.

The same holds for a shop's stockroom, where a new delivery has nowhere to go and the bestseller is hidden behind six boxes of last season. It holds for a clinic where every appointment is taken, so the patient with a real problem waits until Thursday. It holds for a week planned so tightly that a sick child or a good idea has to be turned away at the door.

We treat the full parts as the useful parts, because they are the parts we can see. The space in between looks like waste. It looks like something you would fill if you were a little more organised or a little more ambitious.

But the gap is doing work. It is where the unexpected gets absorbed, where the urgent thing can land without knocking three other things over, where something new has room to arrive.

A little emptiness kept on purpose is not idleness. It is the part that lets everything else function.
