The print shop month

· 1 min read

The quiet weeks fill up, and not with the plan.

A new menu, because the kitchen has changed two dishes and the laminate is scratched. Signage for the term. A price list. A board deck for September. Staff shirts, because the last batch has gone grey in the wash. A single page for the landlord. The allergen card, in both languages, checked by somebody who reads both. None of it was on the plan for the month, none of it has a line in the budget, and all of it gets done, properly, by whoever is in the office.

By the end of the month the team has worked hard and the plan has not moved a week.

This is the cost of the free thing, and the free thing is internal work. It is free because nobody prices it. There is no brief, no fee, no supplier, no line to be approved or cut. It arrives as a person standing at a desk, or a message at nine at night, and it takes an afternoon, and an afternoon is nothing.

The reason it wins every time is not that anyone believes it matters more. It is that a request from inside the building has a face attached to it. The chef is waiting. The operations manager needs the shirts before term. The plan has no face. The plan is a document, and a document cannot be disappointed in you.

Which is why the real job description does not get written in the objectives, or in the annual plan, or in anything agreed in January. It gets written in August, by whoever could walk over and ask.
