The reflex that built the shop

· 1 min read

A woman in Sohar sells hand-stitched baby blankets from her phone. Her customers all say the same thing about her: she answers straight away.

It is the reason the business exists. A new mother asks about a colour at ten in the morning and has an answer before she has put the phone down. That speed turned strangers into buyers and buyers into people who recommend her.

The same reflex is also what goes wrong.

At midnight, tired, she answers just as fast. That is when she agrees to a discount she cannot afford, or to a custom order with a deadline she will miss, usually for the person who pushed hardest. The habit that wins her most days fails on a specific kind of night, in a specific kind of conversation, and it fails every time.

Most of what works for us has a flaw like this built into it. The boldness that gets someone noticed early can make them careless later. The thrift that saves a young business can starve a grown one. The method is not wrong. It simply has a place where it breaks, and we keep walking into that place because the method feels like who we are.

An animal acting on instinct cannot do much about it. It repeats the behaviour in the conditions where it helps and in the conditions where it harms, with no way of telling the two apart.

We are not stuck like that. Once she sees the pattern, she can write herself a rule: answer fast in daylight, and leave anything involving price or dates until the morning.

The flaw was always there. What she can do, and a creature of pure habit cannot, is notice it and change the habit.
