The repairman people would miss

· 1 min read

There is a man who repairs phones in a narrow lane in Sharjah. Within a short drive there are dozens of others. Most of them can replace a cracked screen, swap a tired battery and clean out a charging port.

If he closed tomorrow, people would still get their phones fixed. He is not irreplaceable. Hardly anyone is. Every job has someone else who could do it, and every shop has another shop down the road. Believing otherwise usually leads to a hard surprise.

But something would be lost.

He knows which of his regulars drops his phone face down every single time. He tells people, honestly, when a phone is not worth fixing and they should spend the money elsewhere. He keeps a tin of sweets on the shelf for the children who come in with their parents. He remembers that the man from the fabric shop likes his phone back by Thursday.

None of that is in the job description, because there is no job description. And none of it can be found somewhere else on the same afternoon. People would get their phones fixed, but they would notice the difference, and some of them would go out of their way to say so.

That is a different goal from being irreplaceable, and a more useful one. It does not depend on being the only person who can do the work. It depends on doing the work in a way that people would miss.

Nobody can make themselves impossible to replace. Anyone can make themselves hard to do without.
