The report she does not open

· 1 min read

A seller in Doha runs ads for her small clothing shop and has not opened the results in three weeks.

She knows roughly what they say. Sales have been slower than the spend. Opening the dashboard would turn a vague unease into a figure, and a figure would demand a decision. Not opening it keeps the shop inside the version of the month she would prefer: the one where the next post takes off and everything evens out.

Most of us keep a few drawers like that closed. The card statement we scroll past. The returns we have not counted. The reviews from the bad week. Not looking works as a cushion. It lets us spend the day in the business we hoped to have instead of the one in front of us.

The cushion is not free. Whoever avoids the numbers lives with a low hum of dread, because reality tends to arrive anyway, usually at the worst moment: the supplier's invoice, the thin account, the stock that never moved. The figure did not cause any of it. It would only have mentioned it sooner, while there was still time to change course.

Compare the seller whose margins work. She checks her results every morning over breakfast, and it costs her nothing, because there is nothing in them to be afraid of. She is not braver. She built a shop that can survive being looked at.

That is the quiet test. If you notice yourself avoiding a number, the avoiding has already told you what the number says.
