The sale that was already happening
A woman in Hofuf has decided, after months of bad sleep, to buy a new mattress this weekend. She has the size, the budget and the evening free. The only open question is which one.
That matters more than it first appears. Whatever she sees when she searches, one mattress is leaving a warehouse for her house. Not two, and not none. The decision to buy was made at three in the morning, weeks ago, by her back.
So when a seller pays to put his mattress at the top of her results, he is not creating a sale. He is taking one. The money does not make anyone in the city sleep on more mattresses. It decides who gets the order that was coming anyway.
His rival then has little choice. If the top of the list is for hire, staying off it means disappearing. So she pays too, and the next one pays more, and the price of being found climbs for everybody while the number of mattresses sold stays exactly where it was.
None of that money vanishes. It is a cost, and costs find their way into prices. Spread thinly across every order, it arrives at her door folded inside what she paid.
What makes this strange is that she would have been fine without it. A plain list, sorted by how well each mattress fits what she typed and what earlier buyers said about it, would have served her at least as well. Most likely better.
The whole contest was settled before she started typing. All the paying did was move the sale from one seller to another, and send the bill to her.
