The sale that was already lost

· 1 min read

A woman in Dubai who sells hand-poured candles online plans a three-day sale. By the last evening, she has sold a handful.

So she does what nearly everyone does. She goes over the final day again and again. Perhaps the last post went out too late. Perhaps the discount should have been bigger on the final night. Perhaps a different photograph would have saved it.

It is the natural place to look. The last move is the freshest, and it feels like the turning point because it was the last thing that happened.

But the sale was not lost on the final evening. It was lost weeks earlier.

It was lost when she chose a week when half her customers were away. It was lost when the new scents arrived two days late, so the first morning had nothing new to show. It was lost months before that, when she never kept a list of the people who had bought from her, so on the day she needed them there was nobody to tell. By the third evening, no photograph could have fixed any of it.

The final move rarely decides much. It is just where the earlier decisions become visible.

This is true of a failed launch, a slow season, a shop that never quite found its customers. We look for the heroic save at the end, because that is where the drama is. The real work was quieter, and it happened when nobody was watching for it.

The useful question after a disappointment is not what went wrong at the end. It is what was already settled at the start, and what can be set up differently before the next one begins.
