Market

The school year starts three times

· 1 min read

The back-to-school plan that arrives from head office has one date on it. The region has three.

The uniform shop in Riyadh is already busy, because the Gulf schools are expected back in the last week of this month and the mothers there know it. The stationery aisle in Cairo is quiet, because the public schools there open in the second half of September, if the ministry holds to its usual pattern, and nobody buys a pencil case six weeks early. And the international schools, in both cities, run on a calendar they publish on their own portal, in their own week, which may match neither.

Three clocks. Three first days. Sometimes three in one extended family, when the cousins are at different schools.

The imported playbook does not know this. It was written for a market where school starts in one fortnight and the shops, the ads and the parents all agree on it. So the regional campaign goes live on one date, chosen in a planning meeting far from any classroom, and it lands early for the Cairo household, on time for the Riyadh one, and a week late for the family whose international school went back before the campaign was approved.

The spend then looks as though it worked. Something always sells in August. What the number hides is that the same money reached one household at the right moment and two at the wrong one, and the report cannot tell them apart.

I have watched this for years and the fix is dull. Ask which school. Not which country: which school. The uniform list, the portal date and the supply list are each a deadline set by someone who is not the brand, and the household is working to that deadline, not to the media plan.

Back to school is not a date. It is three deadlines set by three schools, and the only brand that gets it right is the one that asked.
