Piece 199Inside

The sound that was added later

· 1 min read

A phone takes a picture without moving anything. There is no part inside that needs to click. It clicks anyway, because a photograph that makes no sound feels as though it might not have been taken.

Electric cars are nearly silent, and many are now given a soft artificial hum at low speed. The card machine at the checkout beeps when the payment goes through. The lift chimes before the doors open. None of these sounds is a by-product of the machine doing its job. Someone sat down and decided each one should exist.

And nobody objects. Most of us would be unsettled without them. We expect them, and we read meaning into them. The beep is not the payment, but it is how we know the payment happened.

That is the part worth taking seriously. What people experience and what is technically going on are two different things, and the experience is the one they actually buy.

Most products have long silent stretches where nothing tells the customer anything. The order placed at night that produces no reply until morning. The parcel that arrives with the item and nothing else, not even a line saying who packed it. The service that works perfectly and leaves the client wondering whether anyone is still on it.

Nothing is broken in any of these. The machine is doing its job. But the gaps are there, and people fill them on their own, usually with doubt.

So the useful question is not only whether the thing works. It is who is responsible for the quiet moments, and whether anyone has decided what the customer should hear in them.
