The Tuesday table

· 1 min read

Six people in Khobar meet on Tuesday evenings around a dining table to practise calligraphy. None of them does it for a living. Each brings what they made during the week, lays it down, and the others look.

Nobody is graded. Nobody is paid. And yet a week with a Tuesday at the end of it is different from a week without one.

Practising alone, it is easy to stop at the first passable letter. Practising for a table of people who have seen your best, you go back and pull the stroke again. Not to impress them. Because they know what you can do, and arriving with less would feel like letting yourself down in front of witnesses.

That is the useful kind of pressure, and it is hard to manufacture any other way. Willpower fades by Thursday. A group that is expecting you does not.

The table only works on one condition, though. Everyone there has to want to be there.

Twice, someone joined because a friend asked them to. They were pleasant and they came for a while, but they arrived empty-handed, and the evening sagged around them. Their presence made it slightly easier for everyone else to bring less.

The group lost nothing when they drifted off. It got better.

The temptation with any circle like this is to grow it, to welcome anyone and count the chairs. The ones that last do the opposite. They are clear at the door about what membership asks, and they are relieved, not hurt, when someone decides it is not for them.

A group can only lift you if it needs you as much as you need it. Members who are half there do not add to that. They thin it.
