The typing office on the corner

· 1 min read

There is a typing office on a corner in Manama, the kind of place where people used to queue with folders to have their forms filled in properly.

For years the business was simple. The government needed paper, the paper needed to be correct, and most people preferred to pay someone patient rather than be sent home for a missing stamp.

Then the forms started moving online. Not all at once, but steadily, one service at a time.

The owner of a place like that has a choice to make, though it rarely feels like one.

He can treat the change as an insult. Tell his regulars the new system is unreliable. Wait for it to fail. Keep the chairs and the counter exactly as they were, in case everyone comes back. What he will learn, slowly, is that the change is patient too, and it does not need his agreement to keep going.

Or he can treat it as an opening. The forms moved, but the confusion did not. Plenty of people still cannot work out which page they need, which document to upload, or why the system keeps rejecting their photo. A man who has spent twenty years understanding exactly how these requests go wrong knows something valuable. It just lives on a different screen now.

Neither path guarantees much. But only one of them is pointed in the right direction.

What comes next is not ours to cancel. We get some say in its shape, often more than we expect. What we do not get is the option of pretending it is not on its way.
