Piece 435Market

The walls of a small shop

· 1 min read

In a small shop in Al Khobar, a man makes leather watch straps by hand.

He has one bench, one pair of hands and room for perhaps a dozen customers a day. It is easy to picture what he would do if those limits vanished. A workshop full of machines. A website that sends straps anywhere. A team of five.

That wish is comforting and mostly useless. If cutting machines became cheap enough for him, they would be cheap enough for everyone, and the market would fill with decent straps at half his price. He would not be playing the same game with more resources. He would be playing a different game, against far more people, and he would be worse at it.

The limits are part of why his work exists at all. One bench means every strap is cut for one wrist. A small room means he talks to every customer. Too little time has forced him to choose what he is good at, and to stop doing the rest.

A boundary gives you something to push against. Without one, the work has no shape.

Now and then a limit really does move. A new material, a new way to reach people, a rule that changes. Those are the days to pay close attention, because everyone else is about to notice too.

Otherwise, cursing the walls is a way of avoiding the work inside them. The better habit is to be glad of them. His shop is small, and the straps are very good.
