Two sellers at the same counter

· 1 min read

Two sales reps walk into the same small shop in Zagazig on the same morning.

The first opens his bag and starts talking. A new shampoo, a new scent, a new bottle, an introductory deal if the owner takes three cartons today. He has a lot to say and he says all of it. The owner nods and looks past him at the door.

The second came by last month and mostly listened. He asked what people buy, what they ask for and cannot find, what sits on the shelf collecting dust. The owner told him: the women who shop here buy for one wash at a time, and the big bottles do not move. Today the second rep has small sachets. He puts one on the counter and says only that he remembered.

Both are selling shampoo. Only one is selling something the owner already wants.

The first pitch begins with the seller: here is what we made, please look at it. The second begins with the person across the counter: I noticed what you need, and I think I have it. The words are not very different. The direction is opposite.

It sounds easy, and almost nobody does it, because the first way feels like progress. Talking is visible. Listening looks like doing nothing, and it delays the moment you get to show off what you made. But the owner has heard a hundred pitches about products. He has rarely been asked a question and then answered, a month later, with a pack size.
