Two ways to fill a running club

· 1 min read

Two people in Khobar start running groups in the same month.

The first writes a long, honest message. She is new to the city, she found it hard to keep going alone, she would love some company, every pace is welcome, please come even once. A few kind people reply. Most never turn up.

The second writes four lines. Ten kilometres. A fixed time. A fixed pace. The group does not wait for late arrivals, and anyone who cannot hold the pace is welcome to try again next month. Within weeks there is a waiting list.

The first is asking. She offers belonging. She shares her worry, and she tells a story about people looking out for one another. That reaches people who want to be part of something warm.

The second is daring. She shares no doubt and accepts nobody by default. What she offers is standing, and the question every runner hears in those four lines is whether they are good enough to be in it.

People move for one of those two things, connection or status. Most of us assume it is connection, because it feels kinder to say so. But a great many groups, and a great many markets, answer the dare faster than the request. The class with an entry test. The course that turns people away. The table you have to be invited to.

Before writing the invitation, it is worth knowing which of the two the people you want are listening for. In plenty of places, it is the dare.
