Walk it first

· 1 min read

Someone choosing a flat in Heliopolis can learn a lot from the listing and a quick drive past. The photographs, the floor plan, the street name, the way the building looks through a car window at four in the afternoon.

Then they walk it. Slowly, on foot, at the wrong times of day. They find the bakery that opens before dawn and fills the street with the smell of bread. The pavement that floods after one rain. The corner where the same men sit every evening, which is either reassuring or not. The noise from the main road that never reached the car with the windows up.

None of this was hidden. It was simply invisible from where they were sitting.

The same gap opens almost everywhere we make big decisions from a distance. Someone about to open a small shop has usually spent far more time looking at shops than standing behind a till in one. Someone about to write the message meant to persuade thousands of strangers has often never had to persuade a single stranger face to face, with nothing but their own voice, and then watched that person walk away.

Marketing is selling at scale. It is hard to do the scaled version well without having done the plain one: the hesitation, the question nobody expected, the objection that sounds silly until it is heard for the tenth time.

The drive shows the outline of the thing. The walk shows the thing.
