What ran while you were away

· 1 min read

The first day back is when the mistake gets found, and every September, from the platform side, it is the same mistake in a different account.

The team went on holiday in July. Nobody switched the account off, because switching it off felt like a decision and leaving it on did not. So it ran. It ran into a city that had emptied, showing July's creative to the people who stayed behind, at July's bids, against a daily budget set in a week when the city was full. The audience shrank and the spend did not, so the same few people saw the same ad more and more often, and the cost of each result climbed a little every week.

The platform did exactly what it was told. The instruction was July, and August is a different country.

The waste is the smaller thing. The bigger thing is what the waste reveals. An account has two sets of settings: the ones the team believes it runs on, which live in a deck, and the ones it actually runs on when nobody is looking. August is the only month when the second set shows on its own, with no hand on it, and the second set is the truth.

A budget that never moved. A frequency cap that was never set, because someone was always there to watch it. An audience nobody refreshed. A bid that assumed a competitor who was also on holiday. All of it was there in July, hidden by attention.

So the first job of September is not the fourth-quarter plan. It is reading what the account did with nobody watching, because the plan gets built on top of it.

An account's true settings are the ones it runs when the team is away.
