What the courier decides

· 1 min read

A woman in Dubai sells baby carriers online. On a bad week, almost nothing that matters seems to be hers.

The courier loses a parcel in a warehouse she has never seen. A shipment from her supplier sits in customs for reasons nobody explains. The feed decides, without warning, that her posts are less interesting than they were on Monday. A customer who loved the carrier leaves one star because the colour looked different on her screen.

"Out of control" is usually an insult. It describes someone who has lost hold of themselves. But there is a second, plainer meaning, and it is simply accurate. Most of what happens to a small business is out of its control, and always was. Customers, couriers, feeds, the weather, the mood of a whole region in a given month. You can nudge these things. You do not run them.

The trouble starts when we pretend otherwise. Energy goes into fighting the courier, rewriting the post for the fifth time, arguing with the review. All of it is spent on the part of the board that will not move.

The alternative is not resignation. It is sorting. The parcel is gone, but the reply to the worried mother, sent within the hour with a replacement already on its way, is entirely hers. The feed is a mystery, but the short video showing how the carrier fits a tall father and a short one is something she can make tonight. The colour complaint cannot be undone, but the next product photo can be taken by a window in daylight.

Accepting what is not ours to decide is what frees the attention for what is. That is where the leverage was all along.
