What the guest room is for

· 1 min read

A family in Al Khobar is redoing the room where they receive guests, and the discussion has gone on for weeks.

On the surface it is about furniture. Which seating, which carpet, how many cushions along the walls. Listen for a while, though, and it becomes clear the room is doing a dozen jobs at once.

It is somewhere for visitors to sit. It is also the first thing the husband's brothers will see when they come on Friday. It is the mother-in-law's sense of how things are properly done, and the daughter's sense that they no longer have to be done that way. It is an invoice from the carpenter and a favour owed to the cousin who recommended him. It is a loan, if they choose the carved wood. It is a statement about taste. It is a quiet reply to the neighbours who redid theirs last spring. For one person in the house, it is the only room that feels like theirs.

None of those jobs is false. Each is a real thing the room is being asked to carry.

When money is tight, most of them fall away. The room has to seat people and be clean, and that settles it.

As money loosens, the practical job stays exactly the same size and everything else grows. The room still only needs to seat people. But now the family can afford the story of who they are, and that story starts choosing the fabric.

The same is true of a watch, a school, a holiday, a phone. Function sets the floor. Above the floor, people are buying a picture of themselves, for themselves and for whoever is watching.

The more a household can spend, the louder the stories it tells itself become, and the more of the deciding they quietly do.
