When the mood says wait

· 1 min read

Everyone who makes things knows the quiet voice that finds a reason not to start today. The idea is not ready. The timing is wrong. Someone has probably done it already.

That voice is personal, and it has always been there. It tends to get louder the more a piece of work matters, which is why some people learn to treat it as a sign they are near something worth doing.

What has changed lately is that the voice no longer sounds private. It sounds like the room.

Listen to how people talk about new things now. Everything has been tried. Attention is impossible to win. The big platforms decide who gets seen. The economy is uncertain, so better to wait. Starting something feels a little naive, and staying put feels like wisdom.

Some of that tiredness is earned. There are real reasons to be weary. But a mood that spreads this widely stops being a reaction and becomes an excuse everyone can share. It lets each of us sit out, and it makes sitting out look sensible.

That suits whoever is already comfortable. Nobody threatens the way things are by deciding, together, that it is not worth trying.

I think the moments when everyone agrees nothing new is possible are usually the moments just before someone does something new. The ground is clear because so many people have stepped back from it.

If the voice telling you to wait now speaks in everyone's accent, that is not a reason to listen harder. It is a sign of where the work is.
