Where the story stops working

· 1 min read

A placebo is anything that alters the account we give ourselves of what just happened. That account is not a small thing. A well-made box can make a gift feel more generous. A heavier spoon can make the same dessert seem richer. A ritual can make a remedy feel as if it is working, and sometimes, because of the ritual, it does.

A great deal of marketing lives here, and there is nothing shameful in that. Whole categories exist to change how people feel about themselves when they use something. If someone believes the new running shoes will make the early mornings easier, the early mornings may well be easier.

But a growing share of what we buy now rests on agreed measurement. A charger delivers a certain number of watts or it does not. A data plan gives you a set allowance. A tyre stops the car within a tested distance. Believing in it harder changes nothing. The number on the test is the number.

That splits the market more sharply than most sellers admit. If what you make works by changing the story, you are in the story business, and that is a real and respectable business. Do it well, and do not pretend it is something else.

Just be careful where you take it. The more a category has settled on a shared yardstick, the less room there is for the story to do its work, and the more the person telling it looks like someone hiding the number.
