Who else the hurdle keeps out

· 1 min read

A woman in Manama wants to sell fresh food for dogs and cats online, cooked in small batches and delivered cold.

The first week of research is discouraging. The kitchen needs a licence. The recipes need checking by a vet. The food spoils in a day out of the fridge, so every order needs cold packing and a delivery window that actually holds. Each answer she finds brings two more questions.

Most people meet a list like that and quietly go back to the easy version: buy the same imported bags as everyone else, take nicer photos, and sell on price.

The easy version has no hurdles. That is its whole problem. If nothing stands in the way, nothing stands in the way of the next seller either, or the fifty after that, and the only thing left to compete on is who will earn the least.

A plan worth doing almost always has something hard in it. Not a flaw to be engineered out, but the very thing that has kept the space empty. The licence that takes months. The cold delivery nobody wants to run. The trust it takes for someone to change what their animal eats. Each of those has already turned back dozens of people who had the same idea first.

So the useful move is not to look for a path around them. It is to look straight at them, understand exactly why they stopped the others, and learn to work with them until they become ordinary to you.

Once she is through, the same hurdles are still there. They simply face the other way now.

Most people meet a hurdle and ask how to get round it. The better question is who else it is keeping out.
