Operator

Whoever has it now

Send a message to a list of a few thousand numbers in this region, and a share of those numbers no longer belong to the people who gave them.

A phone number in the Gulf is attached to a job. The job ends, the family leaves, the line is cancelled, and after a quiet period the same number is issued to somebody who has just arrived and never heard of the business. The row in the database does not move. The person behind it has been replaced.

So the permission ages. It was given once by somebody who wanted the thing, and it is being spent now on a stranger who has one tool available and no reason not to use it.

From the platform side this arrives as a drift rather than an event. Complaints creeping up, delivery softening, a list that used to behave becoming expensive. The room reads it as creative. The offer is tired, the writing has gone stale, get something new in there. Sometimes that is right. Often the writing is fine and the audience has been changed underneath it, one line at a time, by people who agreed to nothing.

I have started treating a contact detail the way a good operator treats an address rather than a name. Correct on the morning it was collected, decaying from that afternoon. Which means asking again while the relationship is warm, holding a second way to reach a person that does not live on a card inside a handset, and reading how old a permission is with the same care as where it came from.

A list is not a possession. It is a set of doors, and in this region the people behind them change more often than anywhere else I have worked.
