With them, not at them

· 1 min read

A woman in Irbid sells hand-sewn children's clothes from her home, through a page on her phone. Her customers are mothers who found her through other mothers.

There are tools for sellers like her now. Lists, labels, reminders that fire on their own: message the buyer who has not ordered in two months, nudge the one who left a dress sitting in the basket. The language that comes with them is the language of management. Segments, funnels, retention.

Nobody buying a dress for a toddler wants to be managed. They can feel it when they are. A reminder sent because a timer ran out reads exactly like one.

There is another way to hold the same relationship, and it costs nothing to switch on. Instead of managing her customers, she could lead them. That kind of leadership is voluntary: people come along because they want to. She asks which fabrics their daughters actually wear to school. She tells them, before they ask, that a size runs small. She shows the half-finished winter range and lets them choose the colours. She is working with them and for them, rather than doing something to them.

That is not a feature in any tool. It is a way of seeing who is on the other end of the message.

Whole industries drift the other way when competition goes soft and their cleverness turns to what can be taken from customers rather than offered to them. From the inside it always looks efficient. It rarely builds anything a customer would miss.
