Already in the house

· 1 min read

The photograph that matters today is not taken by a brand.

It is taken in a hallway at home, before anybody leaves. A grandmother dresses the children, because she is the one who knows how the sleeves are supposed to sit. Coffee comes out of the family's own pot, the one that only appears on days like this. A phone is propped against a bowl of dates. The picture goes to the family group before it goes anywhere public, and almost everyone it is for is related to the person who took it.

Look at what is in the frame. The pot. The tray. The clothes. The sweets in the bowl. The car on the drive, half in shot. Every object in that photograph was bought before today, most of it years before, and none of it was bought for today.

A brand cannot get into that frame on the day. Not with a post, not with a code, not with a gift box that arrives at four in the afternoon while everybody is at somebody's mother's house.

The house does not go shopping for an identity day. It brings out what it has. Whatever is in the picture earned its place in an ordinary week, for an ordinary reason, and then stayed long enough to be trusted with a day like this one.

Nothing joins that photograph on the day. The day only shows what the house already keeps.
