Piece 387Craft

Detached is not the same as indifferent

· 1 min read

A picture framer is told, by a customer standing at his counter, that the mount he chose is the wrong shade and the whole thing looks cheap.

He needs two things in that moment, and they are easy to mix up.

The first is distance. The frame is not him. The comment is about a strip of card around a photograph, and it may well be right. If he hears it as a verdict on his taste, his years at the bench, his worth, he will argue, or sulk, or quietly make the next one worse. If he can hold the work at arm's length, the comment turns into information. He can look again and see what she sees.

The second is staying power. Redoing the mount means another hour he did not plan for, on a job already paid for. Something has to keep him at the bench.

People often assume that holding the work at a distance means he must not care much, and that caring a great deal means taking every remark to heart. Neither is true. The distance is not coldness. It is attention moved off himself and onto the frame and the woman who will hang it in her hallway. His own story, about whether he is good enough, gets set aside because it is no use to anyone right now.

And the staying power does not have to come from anguish. He does not need to feel his reputation is on the line to cut a new mount. He decided long ago that he is the kind of framer who redoes it until it is right. That was a professional choice, made once, calmly.

Distance from the work, commitment to it. They sit together better than they sound.
