Egypt's biggest gifting day

· 1 min read

The biggest gifting day of the Egyptian year finished on Saturday. February gets all the attention and does not come close to it.

Mother's Day in Cairo is not a card and a bunch of flowers. It is an appliance. Perfume, gold, a kettle, a coat, a phone, a blender in a box too big for the boot. It runs from a child handing over ten pounds of their own money to three siblings putting a washing machine together between them, and the whole of that range sells across the same two days.

The reason the appliance wins is status, in the household sense rather than the peer sense. The gift is opened in a room with the family in it, and it has to be something that can be carried in and named. A voucher cannot be carried into a room. A subscription cannot be handed to anyone. The categories that own the day are the ones that produce an object with a size.

Now look at where the plan for it was written.

A regional plan is built in Dubai or Riyadh, where the same date is a quiet Saturday and the gifting weight of the year sits in Ramadan, in Eid and in the national days. So the occasion reaches the calendar as a line. One post, a small paid budget, a template resized for the market, approved in a meeting where it took ninety seconds.

The market holding the largest gifting day in its own year gets the smallest share of the occasion budget, and no meeting decided that.

A regional occasion budget is a map of where the planner lives. Nobody in the hub has queued for that day, so the queue is not in the plan.
