One weekend, two occasions

· 1 min read

The weekend number is in and it is the best of the quarter. It is also close to useless, and it is the number next year's plan will be built on.

Look at what sat inside those forty-eight hours. Eid, or the day after Eid, depending on where the sighting came in. Mother's Day on the Saturday. A weekend. A family already gathered in one house. A delivery cut-off. Two campaigns, one funded properly and one that was a post. A discount that had been live since the middle of the month for reasons that had nothing to do with either occasion.

Every one of those pushed in the same direction on the same two days.

There will be a slide with a split on it. The split will not have been discovered, it will have been allocated, and the allocation will follow the money, because the model weights what it can see and what it can see is spend. The campaign with the larger budget takes the larger share of the credit. Whoever writes the deck first takes the rest.

Then the split stops being a report and becomes an input. Next year the occasion that was credited gets the budget again, the occasion that did the work gets a post again, and the year after that nobody in the room remembers there was ever a question.

Nobody in that chain is lying. A model cannot decline to answer. It has to put the number somewhere, so it does.

A person can decline. The honest line in that report is that the two occasions cannot be separated this year, and it is the line nobody wants to write, because it does not defend a budget.

When two occasions land in the same forty-eight hours, the result belongs to the calendar, not the campaign.
